Ex Igp Hanif Files Counterclaim Against Kit Siang
Former inspector-general of police Hanif Omar filed a counterclaim yesterday against Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang for defamation
In the counterclaim filed via legal firm Azam Aziz Shaharudin Ali & Co, Hanif claimed that Lim had defamed him through social media and statements uploaded on websites in September
Hanif claimed that Lim's remarks had implied that he had promoted “cock-and-bull” stories on Lim's arrest under the now-defunct Internal Security Act, and that the former IGP was a senile old man, a liar, a person with no credibility and manipulator of historical facts, among others
On Oct 17, Lim filed a civil suit against Hanif for defamation based on remarks made by Hanif which was reported in a Sinar Harianarticle on Sept 6 titled, "Tun Hanif buat pendedahan DAP, PAS (Tun Hanif makes revelation about DAP, PAS)
Hanif was quoted as saying that he was forced to incarcerate Lim for the sake of national harmony during the 1969 racial riots
"DAP suggested that Peninsular Malaysia is split into two, East Coast for the Malays and the West Coast for the Chinese
"What was my answer? I put Lim Kit Siang in prison
"He was in (detention) for two years. That was Hanif's way when I was the inspector-general of police," he reportedly said when speaking at the Konvensyen Karamah Bangsa(Convention on Uplifting the Malay Race) held at Universiti Teknologi Mara in September
Hanif claimed that Sinar Harian had misreported his statements or the text of his speech at the convention and that the media had published words which he never said. The former IGP stated that he never referred to Lim as the person behind the plan to divide Malaysia into two zones based on race.- Mkini
