PETALING JAYA: Upko president Ewon Benedick has been elected the new Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman after securing the most votes at Sabah PH’s election today.
The entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister replaces Kota Kinabalu PKR chief Christina Liew and will assume the position for the next two years, reported Berita Harian.
Ewon expressed gratitude to Liew for her contributions as the previous Sabah PH chairman, particularly her efforts in helping the coalition join the Sabah government after a failed coup by Umno last year.
“Even under new leadership, what’s crucial is that Sabah PH remains part of the larger coalition under the prime minister, regardless of whether it is led by PKR, DAP, Upko or Amanah,” said Ewon.
“The chairman’s role is secondary. Hopefully, we can collaborate as effectively as we used to.
“I will focus on various matters, including bringing development to the people of Sabah, addressing our rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963, and ensuring the stability of the prime minister and the unity government in leading Malaysia.”
Ewon added that Sabah PH will convene a meeting next month to ensure its machinery is prepared for the next state elections.
Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) have both said they would work with PH in the next Sabah elections, which is expected to be held by October next year at the latest.
Earlier this month, GRS chairman and Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor said GRS would establish a committee to discuss the next state elections with both components and allies in the state government, particularly PH.
However, GRS’s major component parties – Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku and Parti Bersatu Sabah – have repeatedly said that local parties must dominate the administration of the state. - FMT
