Emergency Ordinance To Be Amended To Include Order For Use Of Tracking Device For Covid 19 Patients Close Contacts
Electronic tracking devices will be fitted onto Covid-19 patients, persons under investigation (PUI) and persons under surveillance (PUS) to monitor their movements. - STR/FAIZ ANUARKuala Lumpur: Electronic tracking devices will be fitted onto Covid-19 patients, persons under investigation (PUI) and persons under surveillance (PUS) to monitor their movements.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan announced the update today as among new provisions made to the Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021.
The tracker, similar in mechanics to those given to parolees, would be fitted on those with Covid-19 infection or suspected of carrying the virus for a period of 10 days.
This was revealed in a joint statement by Takiyuddin and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba as among five new amendments and provisions that were updated to the act which would be effective on March 11.
"This is a new provision under Section 15(a). An officer can instruct someone who is infected or someone who they believe is infected. In other words the tracking device will be provided to them.
"According to the ordinance, a penalty will be imposed if the person required to wear the device fails to do so," he added.
Dr Adham said Covid-19 patients who are being treated at low-risk quarantine centres and at home would be required to wear the device.
PUI suspected to have contracted the virus would also be required to wear the device.
Dr Adham said close contacts of Covid-19 patients and those who have travelled to red zones are classified as PUI.
These are people who have taken the RTK-Antigen test swab and are waiting for the second reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test.
The third category is PUS, identified as close contacts, on whom a risk analysis would have been conducted by the Health Ministry.
Dr Adham said the National Security Council would finalise the model of the device before March 11. - NST
