Emco At Perak Rubber Glove Factory Workers Dorms And Site
COVID-19 | Another rubber glove manufacturer has been hit with a cluster of Covid-19 outbreak among its workers, prompting authorities to enforce an enhanced movement control order (MCO).
Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said glove maker Central Medicare's workers' dormitory, factory and construction site in Hilir Perak, will be placed under enhanced MCO from Feb 22 to March 7.
"As of Feb 19, the Health Ministry has screened 1,966 workers and found 185 positive Covid-19 cases," Ismail said in his daily Covid-19 update press statement.
"Enforcement of the enhanced MCO is to facilitate targeted screening among 2,808 local and migrant workers living in the locality, and subsequently to control in-community infections," he said.
Clusters linked to glove manufacturers had contributed to a spike in cases during the third wave which started late last year, with the Teratai Cluster - from glove maker Top Glove in Klang - emerging as the country's largest cluster to date.
A number of the companies were found to provide unsafe working and living conditions, with overcrowding being a common issue, prompting enforcement of the amended Workers' Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446).
Meanwhile, Ismail also announced an end to enhanced MCO at Taiping Prison and its staff quarters, with 142 positive cases recorded among 482 screened.
"The Health Ministry has confirmed the remaining positive cases in the locality is showing a downward trend, and there are no more pending sample results," he said.
The Health Ministry today reported 3,297 new Covid-19 cases, breaching the 3,000-mark for the first time in eight days.
The uptick was fuelled by a significant spike in Perak which recorded 1,215 new cases.
This was the first time Perak recorded four-digit new cases in a day during the third wave of the pandemic. The previous record was 245 new cases on Jan 21. - Mkini
