Elevating Adly Is To Fortify Mat Sabu S Position Sources
The proposal to nominate Adly Zahari as a ministerial candidate from Amanah could be a move that goes beyond filling up the vacancy left by the late domestic trade and cost of living minister Salahuddin Ayub.
In fact, the suggestion is also to help Amanah president Mohamad Sabu fortify his position, as the party goes to the polls this December, according to sources.
The sources told Malaysiakini that Mohamad’s position as the party’s top honcho is shaky, and he could be challenged for the position in the polls.
According to the sources, disgruntlement against Mohamad (above, left) is especially prevalent among the grassroots.
Therefore comes Mohamad’s move to elevate Adly (above), with whom he is close, to a ministerial position, said the sources.
“Adly could be made deputy president if Mat Sabu (Mohamad) manages to defend his position as president.
“So, choosing Adly to replace Salahuddin in the cabinet is Mat Sabu’s strategy to fortify his position ahead of the party polls,” said one source, who refused to be named.
Adly is currently an Amanah vice-president and deputy defence minister. The former Malacca chief minister won the Alor Gajah parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15).
Previously, Malaysiakini reported that Adly is expected to be appointed the domestic trade and cost of living minister, to replace Salahuddin who died on July 23 a day after undergoing surgery for a brain haemorrhage.
Mujahid gunning for top post
According to another source, Mohamad could face a challenge for the presidential post from Mujahid Yusof Rawa, who is in an opposing camp within the party.
Mujahid is also currently a vice-president of the party, and he previously served as a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
Mujahid Yusof RawaAccording to a source, influential local NGO Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia (Ikram) is the machinery behind Mujahid gunning for the top post.
“There are calls for the president (Mohamad) to be replaced, and hence, Ikram is platforming the rahmah (compassion) platform to charter Amanah’s direction.
“The rahmah concept has been a core value in Amanah’s vision, while Mujahid was one of the key players behind the introduction of the concept,” said the source.
Amanah will have its party elections on Dec 23 and 24.
According to the party’s constitution, a person can only serve three consecutive terms as president. If Mohamad retains his position, this would be his final term to lead the party.
Similar approach
Meanwhile, another source said Mohamad did not bring the proposal to name Adly as a minister for discussions at the party leadership level.
“The president named Adly without the matter being discussed in the party meeting. Several states (grassroots) have already started moving against the president.
“The president’s contingency now is it is better to present Adly as a ‘sanctioned’ successor, instead of losing everything. However, not everyone is in favour of such an arrangement,” said the source.
The source claimed Mohamad took a similar approach in the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry.
“He only appointed people close to him to government agencies linked to the ministry, to keep his hegemony intact.”
