Mat Sabu Unaware Of Free Najib Signs When Asked For Selfie Says Aide
PELANGAI BY-ELECTION | An aide to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu has denied a news report that the Amanah president joined a flash mob calling for the release of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Press secretary Adeysham Nor said the minister was only entertaining a selfie request by a group of BN and Pakatan Harapan supporters in Pelangai, Pahang, unaware that some of them were holding free-Najib placards.
“I was with the minister when this happened. He had just left the Pelangai by-election nomination centre and was heading towards his car when a group of BN and Harapan supporters asked him for a selfie, which he obliged.
“At the time, he did not notice the placards the group of youths had,” he told Malaysiakini in a text message.
According to the officer, Mohamad only learned about the placards when he informed the minister.
However, Adeysham said the minister regarded the placards as the youths’ right to express themselves.
“He said it is okay as it is within the group’s right to express their demands, but the power to free anyone is with the Pardons Board and that we have to appreciate every youth who wants to support the unity government,” the secretary said.
Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, was among several government leaders who accompanied BN candidate Amizar Abu Adam during the nomination process for the Pelangai state seat by-election in Bentong yesterday.
A Malay daily in one of its reports on the nomination claimed that Mat Sabu had “joined” a flash mob with posters that called for the government to release Najib, who is serving a 12-year jail sentence after he was found guilty of seven corruption-related charges. - Mkini
