Education Health Ministries Working To Ensure Children S Safety In Schools
Students at Sekolah Kebangsaan Teruntum in Kuantan seen wearing face masks amid the Covid-19 pandemic. - BERNAMA picKUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry is working closely with the Health Ministry to ensure the safety of pupils and students attending schools nationwide amid growing concerns over the rise in daily new Covid-19 cases.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin gave his assurance that the Health Ministry would update and inform the Education Ministry on additional measures that should be implemented to protect the safety of students, teachers and other members of the school management.
"I am aware of the concern among parents over the safety of children in schools.
"At the moment, the government has decided to temporarily close schools located within areas identified as (Covid-19) Red Zones such as Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Putatan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Semporna in Sabah.
"Nevertheless, the Education Ministry will continue to monitor in the event there are Covid-19 cases in schools," said Muhyiddin during a special televised address today.
He said if there is a necessity for schools to be closed as seen during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, the matter would be raised at the National Security Council (NSC).
"In addition, if there is a need to impose inter-state movement, the special session by the NSC will deliberate and decide on the matter.
"Having that said, I want assure the people that the government will issue adequate notice to the public before any decision is implemented to avoid any cases of people becoming stranded," he said. - NST
