Economic Recovery After Covid 19 Will Take A Long Time Says Dr M
CORONAVIRUS | Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said it will take a long time for both the local and world economy to recover after the Covid-19 crisis
"(The impact is) terrible, terrible. When people don't go out to work, they are not productive, they are not delivery anything, not helping business and therefore not creating wealth
"If we do recover, it will take a lot of time before we can rebuild the economy again," he said during a Facebook live question and answer session today
Mahathir had previously said that the Covid-19 crisis was worse than the 1997 financial crisis which he oversaw as premier. Speaking in a local context, he said after the movement control order (MCO) period is over, Malaysia will have to rebuild its economic fundamentals
"We will find that some working habits may be reduced, and we will need to uplift ourselves to work harder
"By working hard then we can heal our economy faster," he added
Mahathir, however, said the MCO was necessary and the curve of Covid-19 infections needed to be flattened
He said he has been spending his time at home reading and watching Netflix, particularly a series about Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II's conquest of Constantinople, probably in reference to the show "Rise of Empires: Ottoman"
Asked a curveball question on whether he would prefer to time travel to the past or future, Mahathir said he would prefer to revisit the past
"Maybe if I did certain things I can change the fate of my community, my race, my country
"If I go to the future, I don't know what will happen," he said. - Mkini
