Ec To Set Date For Kuala Terengganu By Election Next Tuesday
The Election Commission will meet on July 18 to decide on key dates for the Kuala Terengganu by-election, after an Election Court invalidated PAS member Ahmad Amzad Hashim’s victory in the 15th general election.
In a statement today, the EC secretary Indera Ikmalrudin Ishak said the commission received the judge’s report yesterday in accordance with the Election Offences Act 1954, and will thus meet on Tuesday next week to discuss the by-election.
“The special meeting will be chaired by EC chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh to discuss key dates for the Kuala Terengganu by-election, such as the dates for issuing the writ of election, nomination day, polling day, the electoral roll to be used, and other preparations for executing the election.
“A press conference will be held right after the special meeting,” he said.
High Court judge Mohd Firuz Jaffril had nullified Amzad’s electoral victory after finding elements of corruption in the election, in the form of distribution of financial aid from the state government - via the i-Belia and i-Student initiatives - prior to GE15.
He had 14 days to appeal the decision, but PAS said it would not do so.
According to PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, this is so that a replacement MP can be voted into office sooner, rather than leaving the constituency without a representative for months while the appeal is ongoing.
He said PAS is also prepared for the possibility of having the by-election held simultaneously with the Terengganu state election on Aug 12. - Mkini
