(Facebook pic)SHAH ALAM: Communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa has reminded students to take good care of the tablet computers they receive under the Peranti Siswa programme, urging them not to sell the devices at Plaza Low Yat.
Annuar said he was confident that recipients would not abuse or take advantage of the government initiative.
“I sincerely hope that this one-off, free-of-charge initiative is not misused.
“Those affected by floods and natural disasters need not worry because other devices will be provided,” he said at the launch of the Keluarga Malaysia Peranti Siswa Initiative.
“As long as the devices aren’t sold off at Low Yat,” he said referring to the popular IT mall in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.
The Peranti Siswa initiative provides tablets for 400,000 university students from low-income families. They will each receive a Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 LTE tablet, with 450 students receiving their tablets today.
Annuar said should the devices be damaged, they can be sent directly to a Samsung service centre. Students will receive a new device under the two-year warranty.
Earlier, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government has agreed to allow students to keep the tablets they receive under the Peranti Siswa programme. The initial plan was to allow only those who did well in their studies to keep the devices.
Ismail said this was different from the announcement of the previous Peranti Siswa initiative, where students were expected to return the device after the completion of their studies.
He said he hoped the decision to give students the tablets would motivate them to study harder and obtain excellent results. - FMT
