Don T Delay Ge15 Because Of Inflation Or Self Interest Najib Tells Pm
Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak hinted today that the current state of inflation or self-interest should not be used as a reason to delay the 15th general election.
The BN adviser, in his speech at the coalition's 48th convention in Kuala Lumpur today, alluded to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's recent interview with Japan's Nikkei Asia Review on whether the current economic state is the right time to hold GE15.
"If we want to talk about inflation, that needs research. What I know is that inflation has a cycle, maybe two to three years.
"Experts say the inflation cycle is two to three years, and that is one view," he said.
Regardless, Najib called on top Umno leaders, including party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and deputy president Mohamad Hassan, to discuss the matter and assist Ismail Sabri in making the right decision."Make sure we help the PM to make the right choice and the right decision because the stakes are too high.
"This is not about Najib, Zahid or Ismail Sabri, no. This is about the future of BN and our country.
"If we are given the trust, given the power, make a decision that is right and wise, do not think of personal interest but that of the party's and country's future," added the Pekan MP.
He also called on BN to take advantage of the current situation where the opposition is allegedly in a state of disarray, based on happenings within PKR and recent by-election results.
Najib's call today is aligned with pressure placed on Ismail Sabri to call for GE15 as early as this year, ahead of the expiration of the current administration's mandate by May next year.
In his speech, Najib also claimed that he was pressured into delaying the last GE14 held on May 9, 2018, and it had cost BN to lose Putrajaya after 60 years.
Najib, who was then Umno president and BN chief, said he had at the time intended to call GE14 soon after the conclusion of the 29th SEA Games hosted by Malaysia in August 2017.
"If we had done it right after the SEA Games, maybe we could have won big.
"But because of certain pressures we postponed, and in that time, things changed," he said. - Mkini
