Don T Blame Ringgit Depreciation On Opposition Muhyiddin
“Everyone wants to blame the opposition; now, who is the government?”
This was the reaction of former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin when responding to the issue of the ringgit’s decline.
According to a Harian Metro report, the Bersatu president said the government must take full responsibility for the fall of the ringgit’s value and not blame others, especially the opposition.
He condemned the government for failing to manage the country’s economy, being dishonest, not fulfilling its promises, and being unable to reduce the price of goods.
“The government should be held responsible. If something goes wrong, blaming the opposition means the government is not responsible.
“The issue now is that the government is no longer trusted or believed to be capable of managing the country economically and in terms of import-export.
“During the one-year rule of the current government, the people can judge their ability themselves,” he said after attending a Chinese New Year celebration in Bukit Pasir, Johor, today.
Former BN minister Salleh Said Keruak had said the opposition is equally to blame for the falling ringgit value and the current state of the economy.
He said this was because the opposition was constantly talking about toppling the government, hence shaking investors’ confidence in the country.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said the country’s economic situation must be looked at comprehensively instead of only focusing on the ringgit’s value.
He emphasized that the depreciating value of the ringgit has not affected investors’ confidence in Malaysia.
He also urged the public not to compare the ringgit’s situation to that of the 1998 Asian Financial Crisis, when inflation and unemployment levels were high.
The ringgit ended lower against the US dollar today. At 6pm, the ringgit depreciated to 4.7750/7795 versus the greenback compared with Thursday’s close of 4.7710/7800. - Mkini
