Don T Act Like We Re So High And Mighty Yong Tells Grs Colleagues
The SAPP president warns leaders against belittling Pandikar Amin Mulia’s Usno, pointing to Sabah BN’s decline after Upko’s exit in 2018.
SAPP president Yong Teck Lee advised “certain junior leaders in Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah” to be honest with themselves about their party’s strength. (Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: Sabah Progressive Party president Yong Teck Lee has advised his coalition allies in Gabungan Rakyat Sabah to stay humble, after a component party claimed it was scorned for asking for seats for the coming state assembly elections
Yong, a former chief minister, said certain junior leaders in Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah in particular should be honest with themselves about their party’s strength.
“Let’s be honest with ourselves, the GRS coalition is not as strong as the Barisan Nasional coalition was prior to the 2018 general election. Yet, some junior Gagasan Rakyat leaders behave and talk as though they are as big and powerful as Umno at its peak before 2018,” he said, according to The Borneo Post.
Earlier this week, United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) president Pandikar Amin Mulia said Usno might go solo in the state elections if it remained sidelined within GRS.
Pandikar, a former Dewan Rakyat Speaker, said Usno had been dismissed by some GRS leaders after his party demanded seats to contest in the state polls.
A divisional leader of Gagasan Rakyat, Rafie Robert, said GRS component parties were free to quit if they were dissatisfied, while Kiulu deputy chief George Teo said Usno should be grateful as GRS gave the party a lifeline by allowing it to join the coalition.
Yong advised the two leaders to read up on the political developments in 2018, pointing to Barisan Nasional’s decline in the state after then component Upko quit the coalition.
He said Upko had in the past been challenged by Sabah Umno to leave BN. When it finally did in 2018, Sabah BN fell from power as Warisan formed the state government.
“Timing is everything.” said Yong.
He said they should instead emulate their party president Hajiji Noor’s inclusivity and honesty in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of GRS. - FMT
