Do You Think Macc Headquarters Is A Comfortable Hotel Najib Asks Guan Eng
Najib Abdul Razak has responded to Lim Guan Eng, who claimed that he was accorded better treatment when detained overnight at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya
The former premier pointed out that he was detained not once but twice and that MACC was then under the Pakatan Harapan government
“Do you really think that the MACC complex is a hotel for me to stay comfortably overnight or that MACC under your Harapan government then would have done me any favours
“Unlike you, I was detained twice overnight by MACC - once for the SRC case in July 2018 and again for the 1MDB case in September 2018
“Not only that but my wife also had to spend a night at MACC unlike your wife who was allowed to go back home,” he said in a statement to Malaysiakini this evening
However, Najib did not mention if he had to spend the two nights in the lock-up or if he had to wear the orange MACC detainee outfit like Lim
Over the weekend, the former premier had said he did spend time in the lock-up but a video from 2018 showed him telling the media otherwise
Whereas, Lim, who was detained on Thursday night, claimed he had to sleep on the wooden floor of the lock-up without a pillow or mattress unlike Najib and urged MACC to explain the purported double standard
'Answer 10 easy questions'Meanwhile, Najib, in his statement to Malaysiakini, said he did not have the same opportunity as the DAP leader to postpone going to the MACC headquarters from 3pm to 9.30pm
“Perhaps if you had gone at 3pm and finished with the procedures, MACC would not have needed to detain you
“And unlike you, who had the good fortune of a friendly attorney-general who self-admitted he is a political appointee to drop your cases despite more than a dozen witnesses already testifying in court, I did not have a friendly attorney-general to drop the cases against me and I was prepared to go through the entire judicial process including the appeal processes
“Be a man. Face the charges in court like a man instead of blaming me, blaming the Perikatan Nasional government or anyone else,” he added
According to Najib, this is the best opportunity for Lim to clear his name with regard to the protracted Penang undersea tunnel allegations
“And if it is true that there is no evidence against you like you said, then congratulations
“This means the court proceedings will end in less than a day as the prosecutors and defence lawyers will stare blankly at each others' faces until the judge dismisses the case due to lack of evidence and no witnesses to question
“Since there is no evidence whatsoever then you should make no attempt to try and delay your court dates as what you did in the bungalow case where you launched multiple attempts to declare the MACC Act as unconstitutional which contributed to a two-year delay of your trial
“The faster you bring the case for court hearings, the earlier your opportunity to prove that the current AG and MACC abused their powers to charge you without any evidence,” he added
In the meantime, Najib, who was recently sentenced to 12 years in jail and slapped with a RM210 million fine over the SRC case, said Lim should answer “10 easy questions” to clear the people's suspicions and doubts about the tunnel project
On Friday, Lim, who was the former Penang chief minister, was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court with soliciting a bribe with regard to the tunnel project
This morning, he was charged again at the Butterworth Sessions Court in Penang in relation to a RM3.3 million bribe concerning the same project
The former finance minister is also expected to face another charge in Penang tomorrow while his wife, Betty Chew, would be charged with money laundering
Lim has denied the charges and claimed that he is a victim of political persecution. - Mkini
