Disaster Agencies On Alert After Rain Warning For Sarawak
The meteorological department today issued a continuous rain alert-level warning from Jan 11 to 13 for 10 zones in Sarawak, including Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong and Sarikei. (Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: The National Disaster Control Centre has issued a disaster operational readiness notice following alert level warnings of continuous rain in several areas in Sarawak issued by the meteorological department (MetMalaysia) at noon.
The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) said in a statement today that state and district-level disaster management committees in affected areas must be activated and be prepared to face impending disasters, especially in high-risk areas.
Nadma said the committees must ensure that every relief centre is equipped with basic necessities and all on-site control posts had adequate operational assets and were in good condition and ready for use.
Earlier, MetMalaysia issued a continuous rain alert-level warning for Sarawak, specifically for Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit (Song and Kapit) and Bintulu from Jan 11 to 13.
The department also said the mineral and geosciences department reported an additional landslide in Sarawak, bringing the total throughout the country for the current northeast monsoon to 267.
The statement added that the public works department reported that landslides had occurred at 54 locations nationwide to date.
Meanwhile, Nadma announced that it completed its post-flood clean-up operations in Selangor today with a total of 607.51 tonnes of waste collected.
“Overall, some 83.5% of clean-up work for phase one and 85% for phase two involving Negeri Sembilan and Melaka have been completed. The total waste collected for both phases was 2,926 tonnes so far,” the statement read.
Besides that, a total of 50,224 or 80.3% of households had received their Bantuan Wang Ihsan financial assistance while another 12,300 households had yet to receive theirs. - FMT
