Deputy Education Minister Slams Pas For Distorting Tiger Fundraiser
Deputy education minister Wong Kah Woh said PAS aims to cause a stir among the Malay community for its own political gain.
PETALING JAYA: Deputy education minister Wong Kah Woh has accused PAS of distorting the facts concerning a fundraiser for vernacular schools organised by Tiger Beer, which was also attended by Amanah’s Aiman Athirah Sabu.
Wong claimed PAS’s aim was to cause a stir among the Malay community for its own political gain, adding that this could disrupt the nation’s peace and harmony.
He pointed out that Tiger, which is owned by Heineken Malaysia Bhd, had hosted these fundraisers for Chinese vernacular schools for 30 years and reduced Putrajaya’s financial burden while enabling the schools to upgrade their infrastructure.
Over the years, the total funds raised (by Tiger) have exceeded RM400 million, he said in a Facebook post.
Last Friday, Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar said it was
embarrassing that Aiman, the deputy housing and local government minister, received a mock cheque for RM3 million bearing the company’s logo at the fundraiser for SJK(C) Tche Min in Sungai Pelek.
Sukri said the school’s initiative to raise funds for the construction of a hall was praiseworthy but claimed it was tarnished by Tiger’s participation, and that it was akin to
normalising alcohol in schools.
Aiman, who is also the Sepang MP and Wanita Amanah chief, later said she was not informed about the contributors until she arrived at the fundraiser.
A police report was also lodged against two Facebook users for allegedly defaming Aiman through a picture featuring her face next to a can of beer, with Amanah’s logo superimposed on it.
Wong, of DAP, said the
attacks on Aiman were despicable and that the government will continue to work with the private sector and NGOs to support the education sector.
In this regard, we also thank all private entities that have given their support to the education sector, like the Tiger Chinese Education Charity Concert, which has been helping to improve these schools’ infrastructure over the years, allowing them to flourish, he said. - FMT
