PETALING JAYA: Sabah DAP remains a part of the state government despite an alleged mining scandal implicating several assemblymen from the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-led administration, says state DAP chief Phoong Jin Zhe.
He said the state party would only review its position in the state government based on “the context and circumstances at a given time”.
However the party was holding engagements across the state to gather public feedback and clarify Sabah DAP’s stand on “key issues”, he told reporters after opening the DAP Wanita and Youth wing conventions in Kota Kinabalu, The Borneo Post reported.
“At this moment, I want to make it clear to the people that DAP is still part of the (state) government,” he was quoted as saying.
“Our commitment to the government remains for now, but we will continuously evaluate public feedback and existing factors to determine the best course of action. Pakatan Harapan must also achieve clarity and resolve internal issues to move forward as a united coalition,” he said.
Phoong urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to speed up its investigation into the mining allegations as its findings could affect Sabah DAP’s future direction.
Last month, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said the central leadership was giving Sabah DAP the mandate to review its position in the state government over the alleged mining scandal.
Loke said DAP would not compromise with corruption but the state party would decide on its next course of action.
Phoong, who is the state minister for industrial development and entrepreneurship, said Sabah PKR has also stated its support for Hajiji Noor to complete his full term as chief minister.
He added that the decision of one PH component would inevitably affect the rest.
“We need the public to view PH as a unified team,” he said. “For instance, if I were to resign now while our PKR colleagues remain in the Cabinet, it would send mixed signals.”
A series of videos linking several Sabah assemblymen to an alleged mining scandal had been viewed as part of an Umno-led plot against the GRS government.
The videos, leaked by a purported whistleblower, had led to Sabah Umno demanding the resignation of chief minister Hajiji, who is chairman of GRS. - FMT
