Dap S Apology Sacrifices Will Go A Long Way Says Analyst

DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook (left) and chairman Lim Guan Eng apologised to GPS and the Sarawak people separately today.PETALING JAYA: DAP’s apology to its rivals, and its political sacrifices will go a long way towards the formation of a unity government, says a socio-political analyst.
Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said the separate apologies from DAP leaders Loke Siew Fook and Lim Guan Eng should be applauded.
He said it shows that the party has “changed” and is willing to compromise and make sacrifices to ensure a unity government is formed.
“Loke visiting the GPS chairman (Abang Johari Openg) in his own home just to apologise is a big gesture,” Awang Azman told FMT.
Awang Azman Pawi.“This may also be seen as ensuring DAP’s past actions towards GPS do not become a liability if they are to work together as the government.”
He also said DAP’s apology will boost GPS’ image as it will be perceived as being invited to be part of the government rather than backing Perikatan Nasional to be in Putrajaya.
“This creates a more positive impression of GPS, compared to the time when they went to look for PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin at his residence a day after the general election,” he added.
Earlier today, DAP secretary-general Loke and chairman Lim apologised to GPS for comments made in the past that may have offended Sarawak’s ruling coalition and the people.
Loke met with Abang Johari and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said the apologies were significant given that GPS was previously against working with PH.
Meanwhile, DAP vice-chairman Chow Kon Yeow said Loke did the right thing by apologising as it shows the national agenda goes beyond “party and personal feelings” for the sake of the country and its people.
“We hope the gesture by the secretary-general (Loke) will be able to help restore good faith and relations among the various parties in Sarawak and PH,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Penang state assembly sitting. - FMT
