Dap Man Slams Nonsensical Rules For Sarawak Elections

The Election Commission’s rules (SOPs) for the Sarawak elections include a two-hour limit on ceramahs.

PETALING JAYA: Klang MP Charles Santiago of DAP has criticised the Election Commission’s rules for the coming Sarawak elections, which include limits on the number of leaders allowed in the state during campaigning. He said it made no sense.
Santiago said the rule to allow only five leaders from other states to enter Sarawak was unfair to Pakatan Harapan as the coalition was contesting all 82 seats in the state assembly.
He said this was especially so when 15 leaders are allowed to move between constituencies.
“None of this makes sense,” he said in a Facebook post.
Charles Santiago.Santiago also questioned the EC’s rationale of allowing those displaying Covid-19 symptoms to vote in a designated area, while persons under investigation could take private transport to the voting centre.
He said these people could easily infect others.
“Can we be relaxed when a new variant, Omicron, has been detected?” he said.
Santiago questioned the logic of allowing the winning candidate to bring five supporters for the official tally of votes, while the unsuccessful ones were limited to three.
“How do we determine who wins before the votes are counted? And why the disparity?” he said.
He also wondered why only EC officers were allowed to be present when ballot boxes are reviewed.
Earlier today, the EC said the list of designated party leaders who will travel to Sarawak must be submitted to the state’s disaster management committee.
Ceramahs will only be allowed in 64 constituencies that do not have internet coverage and will be limited to a two-hour duration.
While those displaying Covid-19 symptoms may vote in a designated area, they must wear double masks and don rubber gloves.
Persons under investigation or surveillance can apply for special permission to vote from their district health office. If permitted, they will be placed in special tents to vote. - FMT
