Cuepacs Calls For Interim Special Allowance For Civil Servants
An expert said a more sustainable salary scheme would stimulate civil servants to improve their work performance. (Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: The salary revision scheme for civil servants cannot be delayed any longer in view of the drastic increase in the cost of living, says Cuepacs.
The civil service union’s president Adnan Mat said the granting of a special allowance should be considered while waiting for salary revision next year to help public servants, especially in urban areas.
“If financial issues are a constraint for the government now, it may be possible to consider a special allowance first while waiting for the public service remuneration system (SSPA) salary revision.
“After the SSPA is finalised and when there is a salary increase, then the government can cancel the special allowance,” Adnan told Bernama.
He said this could help raise the income of civil servants and would help them cope with the current economic challenges.
However, Noor Mohamad Shakil Hameed of Universiti Putra Malaysia said the new salary structure would need to be more sustainable and competitive to improve the standard of living of civil servants and also their productivity.
He hoped that the SSPA study could be concluded soon and implemented this year instead of 2025 because many low-grade civil servants had to work two jobs to make ends meet.
“A more sustainable salary scheme will stimulate civil servants to improve their work performance by being more productive, competitive and committed to carrying out the tasks entrusted to them.
“This is because the payment of fair wages is seen as a form of the government’s recognition and appreciation for the contribution and dedication of public servants, in addition to being able to deal with the integrity problems that are often associated with them as some accepted bribes to cover their small salaries,” he said.
On July 14, last year, the government agreed to review the salaries of civil servants after taking into account there had been no salary review since 2012. - FMT
