Covid 19 Mosques And Surau In Negri Sembilan To Close Until June 7

SEREMBAN: All mosques and surau in Negri Sembilan will be closed to the public from Friday (May 21) till June 7 following an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the state.
State Islamic Affairs Department director Datuk Mohd Zaidi Ramli said only mosque officials and committee members will be allowed to perform prayers during the period but the number will be restricted to 12.
“As for the surau, only three people will be allowed to enter to pray and these are the imam, bilal and siak, ” he said in a statement.
He said those entering the mosques or surau will have to fill up special forms and adhere to all standard operating procedures.
Mohd Zaidi said these places of worship will, however, be allowed to broadcast the azan or the Muslim call to prayer.
Mosques or surau found to be in violation of the Covid-19 prevention SOPs will be closed for at least seven days.
Mohd Zaidi said the department had no other option but to take a drastic measure as several of these places of worship had to be closed due to Covid-19 cases.
“We also sought the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir before deciding on this, ” he said.
He said enforcement officers from the department as well as the police would continue to make their rounds to ensure all mosque and surau committees complied with the new directive.
On Wednesday (May 19), Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said 33 mosques and surau in the state had to temporarily close since the beginning of the year following the detection of positive cases.
Another nine masjid and surau were also temporarily closed after SOP violations.
As a result, he said, several clusters had emerged in the state.
