Counterfeit Supplements With Fake Halal Labels Raise Alarm Businesstoday 21 09 2025
The Muslim Consumers’ Association of Malaysia (PPIM) on September 18 raised concern over counterfeit health products sold online with fake halal certificates, warning that the issue threatens consumer safety, halal compliance and the e-commerce sector.
PPIM Chief Activist Nadzim Johan urged the authorities to investigate and take immediate action against the companies involved.
“If not addressed promptly, these illegal practices could endanger public health and erode the confidence of Muslims in Malaysia regarding syariah compliance and guidance,” he said.
He stressed that the matter also threatens local syariah-compliant businesses operating on e-commerce platforms.
The concern follows a police report lodged by Holista Colltech Limited regarding counterfeit PRISTIN® Omega-3 fish oil products sold on Lazada and Shopee.
Laboratory testing revealed the counterfeit items were made from low-grade palm oil instead of fish-derived Omega-3.
Holista, headquartered in Petaling Jaya, confirmed its genuine halal-certified products are only sold through pharmacies licensed by the Ministry of Health and via its official online stores, Alterni.com and Holista.global.
Nadzim said PPIM has urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) to investigate the platforms and identify those responsible.
He also highlighted three critical issues: misuse of halal certification undermines Muslim trust, counterfeit supplements bypass regulatory oversight and endanger consumers and Malaysia’s e-commerce reputation risks being damaged if violations are not addressed.
“The public is deeply concerned about the emergence of such counterfeit products. With the rapid growth of e-commerce in Malaysia, we fear that other counterfeit cases may exist and remain undetected by the authorities,” he added.
Nadzim also called for pharmacy chains and the Malaysian Dietary Supplement Association to hold urgent discussions to address consumer concerns.
