Cops Wrapping Up Probe Into Clash At Students Clown Face Protest
The police will wrap up investigations into Friday's altercation involving Universiti Malaya (UM) students and supporters of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak tomorrow
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun today said he expects the investigation papers to be submitted to the Attorney-General's Chambers tomorrow as well
Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, Fuzi said police have recorded statements from 26 witnesses
"Action has been taken. We will take further action upon receiving instructions from the DPP," he said
Last Friday, six UM students held a silent protest just outside the university, near a restaurant where Najib was addressing a crowd
Najib's supporters then confronted the students and an altercation ensued. Two Malaysiakini interns who were covering the event were also harassed by Umno leaders and Najib's supporters
Meanwhile, in the Dewan Rakyat earlier today, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh questioned why no one had been arrested over the incident
He said photographs and video clips of the incident had been widely shared online yet no one has been held accountable
"We cannot hide the fact that this is not the first time Umno has done something like this," he said, triggering outbursts from Umno lawmakers in the House
Ramkarpal has repeatedly criticised Umno over an incident in 2009 when 22 individuals, reportedly Selangor Umno Youth members, harassed his father Karpal Singh while in Parliament premises
Ramkarpal also told the Dewan Rakyat today that the federal government had to expedite the passing of laws to address racism
"Last year, we heard the (home) minister say he wants to introduce several laws that will address the issue of racism and such but this needs to expedited so that we avoid things like this from happening
"Regardless of both divides, I feel all in this Dewan must support laws to outlaw racism. Let us all throw our support behind legislation outlawing racism," he said
Calls of "I support" rang out from both sides of the House including from Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) and Shahidan Kassim (BN-Arau). - Mkini
