(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: A couple, both locals, have been detained on suspicion of supplying firearms to an Israeli man who was arrested at a hotel in Jalan Ampang recently. The man and his wife, aged 42 and 40, respectively, were arrested by a team from the Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (CID) at a Ramadan bazaar in Kuala Selangor at 7.15pm last night, Berita Harian reported.
Following their arrest, police brought the suspects to their home, also in Kuala Selangor, and a search was carried out. A gun was found in a backpack inside their car, the report said.
According to sources, the male suspect was believed to be responsible for supplying the six firearms to the Israeli man, who had entered the country earlier this month using a French passport.
It is believed that police will seek a remand order on the couple today, to enable further investigations.
Earlier, police arrested a local man in Cameron Highlands for allegedly being the driver for the Israeli since he arrived in Malaysia on March 12, Berita Harian reported.
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said a 36-year old Israeli man was arrested and found to be in possession of six firearms and 200 bullets.
He said the suspect claimed to be targeting another Israeli national over a family dispute, and added that police are conducting further investigations.
Razarudin said the suspect claimed to have purchased all the firearms, of various models including a Sig Sauer, Glock 27, and Smith and Wesson, while he was in Malaysia.
Following the arrest, police have beefed up security for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other VIPs, amid the country’s relentless support for Palestine in the ongoing Israeli military offensive in Gaza.
“Our concern is that due to the Palestine-Israel issue, we have to take into account the safety of the king, the prime minister, several VVIPs and officers,” he told the media. He did not rule out the possibility that the suspect had other agenda.
The police investigation also focused on whether the suspect is actually an Israeli agent. It is believed that he is not operating alone. - FMT
