Container With Israeli Company S Logo Denied Entry At Perlis Border
A truck with a container bearing the logo of Israel-based shipping company ZIM was ordered to turn back after trying to enter Malaysia through Perlis.
The Customs Department detected the truck, which carried a cargo of frozen chicken from the Malaysia-Thailand border, and ordered it to turn back immediately, said Perlis Customs director Ismail Hashim as reported by the New Straits Times.
The shipment was detected around 12pm on Sunday (June 2) after the truck passed the scanning tunnel at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex in Perlis.
“During the image scanning process, the scanner operator detected that the container originated from Israel based on the ZIM logo displayed on the container’s outer wall.
“Therefore, the truck was detained for verification and further inspection,” Ismail was quoted as saying.
After a joint review with other government agencies, it was confirmed that the container was barred from entering Malaysia as ZIM is an Israel-based company, he added.
“We immediately ordered the container truck with its cargo to turn back to the neighbouring country on the same day,” he reportedly said.
On June 2, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that Malaysia is bound to the government’s policy of zero diplomatic relations and trade agreements with Israel.
He called on authorities to investigate if there were any Israeli goods in any ports in the country using a third party.
Zahid was commenting on the alleged presence of a container bearing ZIM’s logo at a port in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. - Mkini
