(Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: Badminton legend Lee Chong Wei has been appointed as the head of the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) performance committee under the association’s long-term development plan, Tangkis 2030
Former world No 1 Chong Wei described the appointment as a great honour and said he is fully committed to helping improve the performance of Malaysia’s national shuttlers, Berita Harian reported.
“The most important thing is to work closely with the coaching team as they have a deeper understanding of the players’ technical and performance aspects.
“Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. I need to understand what the players go through during tournaments and help them overcome the challenges they face.”
The Tangkis 2030 plan, unveiled by BAM last August, outlines several major targets, including winning the Thomas Cup in 2026, securing a gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and achieving world No 1 rankings in at least three of the five main badminton categories.
Chong Wei’s appointment was announced by BAM president Tengku Zafrul Aziz following a BAM council meeting today.
Tengku Zafrul said BAM has streamlined its committees from 14 to 10 to ensure more efficient and focused governance.
“We have also finalised the list of chairmen for nearly all committees. Four new BAM council members, including Chong Wei, will head their respective committees, based on their areas of expertise.”
He said in addition to BAM council members, external experts would also be invited to join several committees based on their experience, knowledge and passion for the sport.
Tengku Zafrul also said both he and BAM secretary-general Kenny Goh would not serve on any committee to avoid any potential conflict of interest. - FMT
