Chase For Sabah Election Seats Dismays Sapp Chief
Party president Yong Teck Lee described the chase as misplaced priorities among politicians, comparable to that of dogs chasing cars.
SAPP president Yong Teck Lee said his party had already prepared its manifesto while its rivals were in a chase after seats similar to that of dogs chasing cars. SAPP president Yong Teck Lee described the politicians as showing misplaced priorities.
“Such emphasis overshadows the crucial need for parties and leaders to demonstrate a deep understanding of Sabah’s challenges and give well-defined solutions,” the Borneo Post quoted him as saying.
He said the chase for seats was like that of a dog chasing a car and after catching up with it, having no idea of what to do next.
Similarly, these political parties and politicians chase after positions but have no idea what to do when they obtain the posts, he said.
“When the primary focus is merely on obtaining seats, it risks reducing the democratic process to a meaningless chase for power,” said Yong, a former chief minister.
Yong said his party has already published its manifesto for the coming elections, with a focus on political autonomy, land reformation, issues linked to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and securing a 35% share of parliamentary seats for the Borneo states.
“SAPP will continue to pursue our core struggles for the coming elections irrespective of seat sharing or no seat sharing,” he said.
Yong’s comments come days after Sabah PKR accused Sabah Barisan Nasional of lying about having discussed seat allocations with PKR.
The accusation followed an announcement by Sabah Umno information chief Suhaimi Nasir that the state party would contest 40 seats.
The term of the current state assembly expires on Nov 11 and an election must be held within 60 days of its dissolution. However, there has been talk that the election may be held in July or August. - FMT
