Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the Islamic party would no longer have anything to harp on over the royal addendum issue.
SHAH ALAM: The call by Pahang ruler, Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, for the public to refrain from discussing a royal addendum linked to Najib Razak will stop PAS from exploiting the issue, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“Those who wanted to take advantage of this issue will fail. There goes PAS’s strategy,” said Anwar, who is also the PKR president, at the opening of the Selangor PKR annual general meeting last night.
He added that the Islamic party would no longer have anything to harp on when it came to this matter.
In January, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan cast doubt on Anwar’s ability to lead the government, citing his management of the controversy over the royal addendum.
The party also held a rally in solidarity with Najib on the same day the Court of Appeal heard the former prime minister’s application on a supplementary decree.
Anwar praised the Pahang sultan for calling for the public to let the law take its course.
Yesterday, the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong said the matter was currently within the purview of the courts and called for all parties to respect the process.
He said there was a need to avoid creating confusion and sparking unnecessary debates.
On Jan 6, the Court of Appeal had, by a majority of 2-1, granted Najib leave to begin judicial review proceedings to compel the government to execute the addendum issued by Al-Sultan Abdullah when he was king.
The addendum allows Najib to serve the remainder of his six year jail term, for graft, under house arrest.
The Federal Court will on March 24 hear an application by the attorney-general for leave to appeal against the ruling handed down by the Court of Appeal. - FMT
