Cabinet Yet To Decide On Reward For Ziyad
The cabinet has yet to decide on any reward for national shot putter Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli, who won gold in the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 before it was withdrawn.
Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu, however, said Ziyad will still receive an incentive from the government.
“Ziyad will still receive an incentive from the government for his past success.
“The reward for what happened to him during Tokyo 2020 have yet to be decided,” Faizal told Malaysiakini.
He said this when asked for comments over his ministry’s proposal on a suitable reward to be given to Ziyad after his paralympic performance.

On Aug 31, the world sports arena was rocked by a shocking incident in Tokyo after Ziyad was denied the gold medal in the men’s F20 shot put event. His throw of a distance of 17.94 metres was also a new world record for the event.
He was classified as Did Not Start (DNS) following a protest lodged by Ukraine, who claimed that Ziyad was late to enter the call room.
Ukraine’s Maksym Koval was announced as the gold medallist with a throw of 17.34m, breaking Ziyad’s world record of 17.29m that he had set at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London.
The incident led Ziyad to lose out on an RM1 million reward promised under the Sporting Victory Reward Scheme for a gold medal, with an additional RM100,000 from FWD Takaful.
The media previously reported calls from several parties for Ziyad to still be awarded the RM1 million prize as appreciation for his sacrifice and success in Tokyo. - Mkini
