Cabinet To Discuss Interfaith Guidelines Tomorrow Pm
The cabinet meeting tomorrow will discuss the controversial guidelines on Muslims attending non-Muslim events.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim gave this one-line answer when met by the media in Putrajaya today.
In a written parliamentary reply published yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Na’im Mokhtar announced that the government would be introducing a new set of guidelines for events involving Muslims at non-Islamic houses of worship.
The guidelines include obtaining permission from religious authorities if the event includes Muslims, and the events must not contain elements that could offend Muslim sensitivities.
Na’im’s announcement has been met with pushback, including from Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan who argued that it could make things difficult for Muslim MPs.
Last Friday, Anwar himself admonished those who made an issue about different ethnic groups in the country celebrating the festivals of other communities.
He said the country should serve as a model for strong racial unity.
Continue practising muhibah
At a separate event in Putrajaya today, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming - who had also faced backlash over Muslims being present at non-Muslim celebrations last Christmas - declined to comment on the proposed guidelines.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming Ng Kor Ming“Today is about muhibah (togetherness) and Madani,” he said when met at his ministry's Chinese New Year celebration.
Earlier, PKR lawmaker Tan Kar Hing urged all parties to continue fostering a culture of harmony and mutual understanding among the races in the country, as demonstrated by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and the Madani government leadership.
“I observe that our national leaders today, including the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, and our prime minister (Anwar), consistently emphasise in their speeches, official statements, and actions that they truly understand the religious beliefs of all Malaysians and the interfaith understanding we have upheld over the years.
“This is something we should encourage and continue practising as part of our daily lives in a multicultural nation,” he said at a press conference in Parliament today.
In 2019 and 2023 it was reported that Sultan Ibrahim had attended a Thaipusam event at a Hindu temple in Johor. - Mkini
