Najib Razak has urged Azhar Azizan Harun to clarify the contents of a letter he is alleged to have sent to the Palace.PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has asked the Dewan Rakyat speaker to speak up on the legitimacy of the prime minister, saying that his alleged letter to the Palace means Muhyiddin Yassin has lost his power to run the country.
Najib, in his Facebook page, posted a screenshot of the purported letter from speaker Azhar Azizan Harun dated Aug 9 to the Palace which states Muhyiddin has lost the majority.
“The letter has gone viral and Umno Youth has even lodged a police report two days ago.
“If the letter is authentic, which I have been made to understand it is, any decision made by the government today can be challenged in court. So, it is the duty of the speaker to break his silence and put things right,” Najib wrote.
He said this is because Muhyiddin, as the 8th prime minister, loses legitimacy and all the powers vested upon him by the Federal Constitution if the Aug 9 letter to the Palace is legitimate.
He said the letter confirms officially that Muhyiddin is going against Article 43 (4) of the Federal Constitution by remaining in power.
In the letter, Azhar had apparently said the current prime minister only has the backing of 100 MPs out of 220.
Yesterday, Muhyiddin made a pitch to woo opposition MPs to support the government, which he said would be critical in achieving political stability.
He also said that he was seeking bipartisan support to pass the upcoming confidence motion in Parliament.
He promised that if the motion received two-thirds support in the Dewan Rakyat, a constitutional amendment bill to limit the prime minister’s position to just two terms, as well as an anti-hopping bill would be introduced in Parliament.
So far, all opposition parties have rejected the offer, describing it as insincere and coming at a time when he had lost his majority in Parliament. - FMT
