Body Of 10 Year Old Girl Found As Sabah Storm Deaths Climb To 14
The body of a 10-year-old girl was recovered late on Monday night from the rubble of a house in Kampung Maragang Tuntul, Papar, making her the final victim of Sabah’s deadly landslides and floods.
Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Pisar Aziz said the girl was found at 8.45pm, several hours after her 34-year-old mother and six-year-old brother were also pulled from the debris.
All three had been trapped when their home was buried in mud on Monday morning.
This brings the statewide death toll to 14 since last week.
The worst-hit location was Kampung Cenderakasih in Kota Kinabalu, where seven people were killed, including four children aged between two and nine.
ADSIn nearby Papar, a 38-year-old woman and her 11-year-old son died when three houses in Kampung Mook were destroyed.
Separately, a 20-year-old man drowned while fishing in Kuala Penyu, the only fatality not linked to landslides, while a 97-year-old man was killed last week when his home in Kampung Sarapung, Penampang, was buried.
Chief Minister Hajiji Noor cancelled the Malaysia Day celebration scheduled for today at Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu, saying state resources must be directed towards rescue and relief.
“The well-being, welfare and security of the people are of utmost importance,” he said.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has pledged RM10 million in federal aid to support immediate disaster response in Sabah.
The Civil Defence Force said a total of 2,272 people from 590 households in 96 villages have been displaced across Beaufort, Penampang, Tawau, Membakut, Papar and Putatan, with 19 relief centres now operating. - Mkini
