Bn Harapan Mps Unite In Finding Solution To Temple Riots Issue
In a rare show of solidarity, several MPs from across the political divide held a joint press conference today to call for an emergency parliamentary session to discuss the recent series of riots near the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ25, Subang Jaya
The press conference was held after Umno’s Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee and PKR’s Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil submitted separate motions under the Section 18(1) of the Dewan Rakyat’s standing orders for the emergency sitting to be held
“I have submitted the motion and discussed with the speaker. Yes, the opposition had submitted a motion and we have done the same, but now we are holding the press conference together
“We want to show our stance that we are together on this issue regardless of our party affiliations,” Fahmi told a press conference attended by Pakatan Harapan, Umno, and independent MPs
Among present were Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar (Umno), Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah (PKR), Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh (DAP), and Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Independent)
Just moments earlier, Umno vice-president and Bera MP Ismail Sabri led a group of Umno and MIC elected representatives to announce BN’s motion submitted by Ronald
He said that he hopes Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof would accept the motion and allow debates on how to put a stop to the chaos
“We are concerned that if this is not quickly brought under control, it would spread not only to Subang but the rest of the country. This is not good for the country’s future, which have always been tolerant and peaceful
“We’re worried that certain parties may take advantage of the situation and turn it into a racial issue,” Ismail said
He urged for immediate action to be taken to stop any gathering near the temple
Meanwhile, Fahmi said Ariff is considering to allow debates on the emergency motion on Thursday
In the meantime, he urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading information that is unverified or untrue, which would aggravate the situation
Asked why no PAS elected representatives present at the press conference, Ramkarpal said the group of MPs at the press conference have merely gathered the MPs still in parliament at the time.“We will invite them (PAS) as well, of course,” he added. - Mkini
