Bersatu To Make Official Statement On Muhyiddin S Post Azmin
Bersatu is expected to make an official statement regarding its stance on retaining party president Muhyiddin Yassin in his position amid ongoing corruption charges.
Party supreme council member Azmin Ali (above) said the statement may come as soon as tonight.
“An official statement will be made tonight,” he told reporters after attending the Bersatu supreme council meeting at a PAS office in Taman Melewar, Gombak, Selangor today.
Supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan was quoted earlier today saying that Muhyiddin is expected to retain his position.
He said a motion on the matter will be raised at the Bersatu central body’s annual general assembly tomorrow.
“As of now, we’re unanimous in wanting Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) to remain as president,” Wan Saiful said.
Bersatu supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan JanYesterday, Muhyiddin claimed trial to four counts of abuse of power and two money laundering charges involving RM232.5 million.
He faces 20 years in jail and a fine five times the amount of gratification involved or RM10,000 whichever is higher for the abuse of power charges.
For the money laundering case, he may be sentenced to prison for 15 years and fined five times the amount involved or RM5 million, whichever is higher.
The Pagoh MP claimed the charges against him were “prematurely” framed by the authorities before the investigations were even completed, alluding that the government was using enforcement agencies as a tool for political purposes.
However, he left it up to the Bersatu supreme council to determine whether he will continue to hold the position of party president.
Bersatu president Muhyiddin YassinIt was reported that the Bersatu supreme council would discuss the issue in its meeting earlier this afternoon.
However, Azmin dismissed this saying that today’s meeting was to discuss preparations for the party’s annual general meeting to be held tomorrow.
“This is a normal meeting before holding the annual general meeting, it is a special supreme council meeting to verify some documents such as the (party’s) financial report that will be presented in the assembly tomorrow.
“We also listened to the reports of other meetings held, such as Bersatu Youth and Srikandi Muda (Bersatu’s wing for young women).
“Today’s meeting is a normal procedure before we go to the general assembly tomorrow,” he assured. - Mkini
