Bersatu Supreme Council Yet To Decide On Muhyiddin S Presidency

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin arriving at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court yesterday.KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu’s Supreme Council has yet to decide whether Muhyiddin Yassin should remain the party’s president.
“Not yet. We’re going to have our Supreme Council meeting right after our Armada (Bersatu Youth) meeting at around 6.30pm,” Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said at a press conference during the party’s annual general assembly here.
“So perhaps you can enquire about it later after the meeting.”
The Machang MP was asked whether the Supreme Council had met to discuss Muhyiddin’s status as party president following the charges made against him at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court yesterday.
Former prime minister Muhyiddin claimed trial to four counts of abuse of power in relation to the Jana Wibawa programme to obtain RM232.5 million for Bersatu.
He was also charged with two counts of money laundering amounting to RM195 million.
The Pagoh MP pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Yesterday, Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu said he was informed that Muhyiddin will be slapped with another corruption charge on Monday in Shah Alam.
When asked whether Muhyiddin should resign, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal today said he felt the president should remain in his post until “things have been made clear by the court”.
“He should stay as president, but we shall see what are the deliberations among the Supreme Council members today,” he said.
“I believe we will ensure that he remains as president.”
Previously, Bersatu Supreme Council member Faiz Na’aman said there was no issue with Muhyiddin continuing as president as long as he had not been convicted.
The party’s information chief Razali Idris also said it would be “illogical” for Muhyiddin to step down, stating that Bersatu leaders would not agree to it.
Razali’s predecessor, Wan Saiful Wan Jan, resigned from his post after he was charged with accepting a RM6.9 million bribe and soliciting an unspecified amount over a RM232 million road project linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.
At the time, Muhyiddin said he accepted Wan Saiful’s resignation, not because the Tasek Gelugor MP was guilty, but to set a standard as the Bersatu man had court charges brought against him.
The Jana Wibawa programme, which was introduced in 2020 when Muhyiddin helmed the government, was aimed at helping Bumiputera businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic. - FMT
