Bersatu Man Wants Harapan To Allow Straight Fight With Umno In Rural Areas

The Pengerang Bersatu chief has made the extraordinary move of asking other parties to step aside in the rural areas of Johor to allow his party to have a straight fight with Umno in the upcoming state election.
Mohd Faizal Asmar's party, which left the Pakatan Harapan coalition in 2020 leading to its government's downfall, is now asking his former allies to allow Bersatu to carry the fight in the rural Malay heartland.
"Recently, Johor Bersatu leader Muhyiddin Yassin, as chairperson of Johor PN (Perikatan Nasional), announced that the coalition will contest in all 56 Johor state assembly seats in the upcoming election.
"As a grassroots leader, I very much welcome this call. We are preparing a competent and strong team to represent PN at the state representative level," he said in a statement.
Mohd Faizal said the Pengerang parliamentary constituency, which is held by former Umno minister Azalina Othman Said, has two state seats - Penawar and Tanjung Surat.
"During the last GE, these two state constituencies were contested by Harapan but unfortunately they (Amanah and PKR) lost badly to BN. This shows that such parties are still not accepted by the Malay community in the rural areas," he said.
In 2018, Umno's Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain defeated Ahmad Kamal Nor of Amanah in Penawar while Syed Sis A Rahman beat PKR's Zamil Najwah Arbain in Tanjung Surat.

"With the strength of our team and the acceptance of the Malay voters, we are very confident that we can give fierce competition to BN.
"Furthermore, when Muhyiddin became the eighth prime minister, he managed to pay off the debts of the Felda settlers. They are all very indebted to the former PM," he claimed.
The Election Commission will hold a special meeting on Feb 9 to fix the dates for the Johor state election after the state legislative assembly was dissolved on Jan 22. - Mkini
