Bersatu Man All Should Be Consulted Before Parliament Is Dissolved
All political stakeholders, including Pakatan Harapan, should be consulted before a decision can be made on dissolving the Parliament to make way for the 15th next general election (GE15), said Bersatu supreme council member Muhammad Faiz Na’aman.
He described the enthusiasm of certain Umno leaders in urging for GE15 to be held earlier as ‘selfish’ and can be considered as a “betrayal” of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s power in matters concerning Parliament’s dissolution.
“Perhaps the court cluster and its supporters have forgotten that the stability and harmony of the country’s governance do not depend solely on the dominance of a single party representing a single racial group, but on the cooperation and fair sharing of power between everyone who is a Malaysian citizen, including those in Sabah and Sarawak.
“Therefore, it is appropriate for every stakeholder in the country’s political affairs, including the opposition who signed the memorandum of understanding with the government, to also be consulted when discussing the question of dissolving the Parliament.
“The same goes with the parties that make up the Malaysian government today such as Perikatan Nasional and Gabungan Parti Sarawak. They should all be respected and their opinions are taken into account,” Faiz (above) said in a statement today.
‘PM has been firm in his principles’
He added that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob should be commended as he has been firm in his principles about not interfering in the affairs of the judiciary, similar to his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin.
But it is probably because of these principles that Ismail Sabri is being pressured from all angles by some Umno leaders who “cannot wait to overthrow their own government again”, Faiz said.
He warned that in an era of geopolitical and global economic turmoil exacerbated by the military conflict in Ukraine and the dispute in the South China Sea between major powers, Malaysia needs a collective government that represents the interests of each citizen.
The government should focus more on domestic economic viability in areas such as food supply, digitalisation to save costs and time as well as a holistic and updated national defence plan, he said.
“Therefore, it is absurd that the calls for the GE15 to be held as soon as possible are being done on the pretext of wanting stability, when in fact, rushing the general election at a time when the country is still recovering from Covid-19 (now the Omicron variant) and generally the rakyat are still crawling out of economic hardship is a recipe for seizing political power while sabotaging that stability,” Faiz said.
Calls for an early general election have grown increasingly louder from Umno since their landslide victory in the Johor snap polls.
While Ismail Sabri had initially appeared reluctant to cede to demands for snap polls, he then said he would not wait one second longer to dissolve Parliament - after discussions - if Umno and BN’s victory is assured.
However, Umno leaders have since indicated that the general election would be at least four months from now. - Mkini
