Bersatu Appoints Ex Speaker To Head Party S Appeals Board
Bersatu has appointed former Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to lead its appeals board as the party admits to facing internal problems that it “views seriously”.
In making the announcement, its secretary-general Azmin Ali said the party is dedicated to finding solutions to these internal divisions.
“The supreme council views the party’s internal problems seriously.
“The council is dedicated to continuing to work collectively to find a solution in the spirit of mutual respect, shared understanding, and to firmly defend the party’s constitution,” Azmin said in a statement today.
ADSThis comes on the back of weeks of brickbats and accusations against the party’s senior leadership, sparked by a disciplinary board decision to sack five members and suspend one for violating the party constitution and its Code of Ethics and Conduct.
The six, including Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, have appealed the disciplinary board’s decision.
The group, along with fellow MP Saifuddin Abdullah and other grassroots leaders, had urged Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin to give way to his deputy Hamzah Zainudin to helm the party.

Bersatu sec-gen Azmin AliApart from Azhar, Azmin named four other appeals board members, including Zulkifli Noordin, Redzuan Yusof, Abdul Latiff Ahmad, and Fahimee Ismail.
Azmin also announced that Bersatu, along with the other parties under Perikatan Nasional, will field candidates in the Nov 29 Sabah election, with the aim of forming the next state government.
‘Maintaining neutrality’
However, in a separate update, Redzuan later announced that he had rejected his appointment as a member of the party’s appeals board, due to perceptions of him being a staunch supporter of Muhyiddin.
The former Alor Gajah MP stressed that he wanted to maintain the board’s neutrality, explaining that he did not want to burden the party and its leadership.
“I am considered a strong Muhyiddin supporter by many, and if I sit on the board, its neutrality may be called into question.
“As much as possible, members of the appeals board should not comprise individuals with close ties to the leadership. So it’s best that I turn down the appointment,” he was quoted as saying in Free Malaysia Today.
Redzuan, who is also one of the party’s co-founders, further added that he had sent out a written notice to inform Muhyiddin of his decision. - Mkini
