Beng Hock Group Seeks Over Rm10k Funds For Lee Lan S Un Complaint
The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) is appealing for continued public support to help raise the remaining RM10,925 needed to send Teoh Lee Lan to the United Nations to file a complaint with the Special Rapporteurs on Human Rights.
ADSThe association said that its over a month-long crowdfunding campaign, which ran from June 22 to July 30, raised a total of RM39,075, falling short of its RM50,000 target by RM10,925.
“We call on the public to continue supporting this effort to send Lee Lan to the UN to file a complaint with the Special Rapporteurs on Human Rights.
“During the month-long ‘Resist Forgetting, Seek Justice for Beng Hock’ campaign, we raised a total of RM47,238.
“The four public forums held in Penang, Johor Bahru, Malacca, and Kuala Lumpur incurred total expenses of RM8,163. Therefore, the net amount raised is RM39,075,” the association said in a statement.
Those who wish to donate can transfer their contributions to Public Bank account: 3200 06 4210 (Persatuan Perkembangan Demokrasi Malaysia).
Donation drive
The association had opened the donation drive in July, to support the Teoh family’s international advocacy and lobbying efforts in seeking justice for Beng Hock.
This was after the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) ultimately classified the case as no further action (NFA).
“We submitted letters to these three UN Special Rapporteurs on July 4, and with the support of international and regional human rights organisations, we will continue to highlight this human rights violation to the world and expose the true meaning of the so-called Madani Malaysia,” the association said in a statement on Facebook.
The group said that the letters were sent to Morris Tidball-Binz, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions; Dr Alice Jill Edwards, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and Dr Ganna Yudkivska (Chair-Rapporteur), UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
On July 29, Lee Lan, who is Beng Hock’s sister, detailed demands for the government to invite a renowned international criminal investigation expert to conduct an independent investigation into her brother’s 2009 death.
Among others, these include invoking Section 302 of the Penal Code that deals with murder, and establishing an advisory team of distinguished human rights figures.
ADSMalaysiakini approached Lee Lan to clarify her demands following her “double standards” accusation against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary, who suggested there was no need to grant the Teoh family’s request for international experts to examine Beng Hock’s death.
Case background
In 2009, Beng Hock, who was then-Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah’s aide, was found dead after overnight questioning at Selangor MACC, which was then headquartered at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam.

The late Teoh Beng HockA 2011 royal commission of inquiry ruled that he was driven to suicide due to aggressive interrogation.
However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled his death was caused or accelerated by unlawful acts, including those of MACC officers.
On Nov 21 last year, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered the police to complete the investigation into Beng Hock’s death within six months.
Last year, Anwar pledged to the family that the case would be investigated thoroughly.
However, in May, the AGC classified the case as NFA. - Mkini
