KUALA LUMPUR: Employers need to be more flexible and prepare family-friendly company policies to support women in the workforce, says women, family and community development minister Nancy Shukri.
Speaking at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur at an event celebrating Women’s Day 2025 today, Nancy said society must erase the stigma against women who wish to pursue their careers.
“We must champion equal rights and opportunities for all. Malaysia Madani will not be complete without the participation and contribution of women in all aspects of national development,” she said.
Nancy said female participation in the workforce remains low at 56.2%, adding that many women have been forced to halt their careers after marriage or childbirth.
“Female participation as decision-makers in the public and private sectors also remains low, showing the need for efforts to shore up female leadership,” she said.
She said the government has set a goal of 60% female participation in the workforce, as part of its efforts to ensure women have equal access to economic opportunities.
Nancy said her ministry has organised pre-Women’s Day celebration events, with the involvement of state government agencies, Pos Malaysia, the police, state health departments, TalentCorp, and NGOs, among others.
“The main activities include an awareness and advocacy campaign, forums and dialogue sessions with female leaders and experts in various fields, and discussions of female leadership and well-being,” she said. - FMT
