Batu Kawan Mp Gets Ejected From Lower House Over Tajuddin Cursing Issue
PARLIAMENT | Kasthuri Patto (Pakatan Harapan-Batu Kawan) was ejected from the Dewan Rakyat today after she refused to accept a ruling regarding Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s (BN-Pasir Salak) alleged sexist remarks.
Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Rashid Hasnon had addressed the letter Kasthuri sent this week demanding swift action against Tajuddin for his allegedly sexist behaviour.
The deputy speaker ruled that the curse word allegedly uttered by the Pasir Salak MP was not in the Hansard - which elicited an objection from Kasthuri and caused her to be removed from the House.
Tajuddin, who was given two minutes to speak on the issue in the Lower House, deemed the claim a “political assassination”.
“I strongly object and deny the accusation from Batu Kawan and her conspirators who are working together to bring down my image,” he said.
Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul RahmanIt is said that Tajuddin’s punishment for his alleged use of curse words involved two days of suspension - a punishment which Rashid claimed started last Wednesday when he had ordered Tajuddin to leave the House.
However, it is not clear when the second day of the suspension will be implemented.
Harian Metro reported that the Umno veteran was present in the Dewan Rakyat the following day, and it was seen that the deputy speaker failed to order Tajuddin to leave the House today.
Kasthuri fought with Rashid on the ruling before he asked her to leave the Dewan Rakyat.
The deputy speaker had raised his voice to insist that the decision had been made, in addition to giving two warnings to Kasthuri.
"I have made a ruling," he stressed in a high tone.
However, Kasthuri’s refusal to return to her seat prompted the deputy speaker to order the Batu Kawan MP out of the Dewan Rakyat.
This caused several opposition representatives, including Teo Nie Ching (Harapan-Kulai) and Ramkarpal Singh (Harapan-Bukit Gelugor) to clash with Rashid.
Because of this, the debate on the Independent Police Conduct Commission Bill 2020 was delayed by almost 30 minutes.
Unparliamentary conduct will continue
Kasthuri criticised the move by the deputy speaker, saying that Rashid’s ruling continues to allow ill-mannered lawmakers to use invective in Parliament.
“The speaker continues to enable potty-mouth and foul-mouthed MPs to speak in this uncouth (and) unparliamentary manner where MPs like us have to be victims of verbal abuse in the House.
“There’s no point in speaking about a world-class Parliament when you cannot even reprimand one MP to retract and apologise for using a vulgar word in Parliament repeatedly, in defiance.
“When Pasir Salak used it on us, he knew, perhaps, that no action will be taken on him but today, I have been sent out for demanding an apology and a retraction but Pasir Salak - who used a bad word three times in Parliament - has had no action taken against him.
“He continues to sit in that House now, while I’ve been sent out,” she told Malaysiakini at Parliament today.
Kasthuri to see speaker
Yesterday, Rashid said that he would determine today whether to penalise Tajuddin and also confirmed he received Kasthuri’s letter.
Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Rashid HasnonOn July 20, Tajuddin had allegedly said “p*****k” - a Malay swear word - in the Lower House.
When asked if there was anything that can be done to fight back against the ruling, Kasthuri said that she was unsure of the duration of her discharge from the Dewan Rakyat.
"If I'm allowed back tomorrow, I will be back tomorrow. I will go and see the speaker to tell him I am extremely disappointed because the speaker handed it to the deputy speaker to handle.
"So when the deputy speaker failed (at) his job, it's equivalent to the speaker (failing), because it is the chair, not the person alone. It's the sanctity of the chair.
“We all depend on the speaker for guidance, ruling and to set the bar of language in the house, he has failed Parliament as a whole," she added. - Mkini
