Azam Baki Protest To Relocate To Bangsar Says Organiser

The 'Tangkap Azam Baki' rally will proceed at a new location tomorrow after police announced closures of all major roads and rail access leading to the Sogo shopping complex, according to organisers.
In a statement, the 'Tangkap Azam Baki' Action Committee said rally organisers supported by 33 NGOs and 11 political entities will gather along Jalan Bangsar near the Bangsar LRT station from 11am tomorrow.
"We take note and are highly impressed with the deployment of 1,010 police personnel for the 'Save Azam Baki Operation' that has led to most parts of Kuala Lumpur being under 'lockdown' just for one individual.
"This extreme action makes it appear as if there is a secret involving high-profile individuals that must be covered up, particularly on issues of corruption and abuse of power," said the group.
"We have yet to forget, former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak himself was once arrested by the police for corruption.
"On the other hand, Azam Baki as MACC chief commissioner appears to be more powerful than the person who once held the highest office in the country," they said.
Dang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya earlier today announced the closure of six major roads around the city centre and temporary suspension of operations for 24 selected stations across all rail lines - the LRT Ampang-Sri Petaling line, LRT Kelana Jaya line, MRT Sungai Buloh line, monorail and KTM.
The ‘Tangkap Azam Baki’ protest was mobilised in the wake of a shareholding scandal implicating the MACC chief, prompting calls for an independent probe on the allegations.
Azam claimed the over two million shares in two companies were not his but purchased by his brother in his name - in 2015 and 2016 - prompting the Securities Commission (SC) to also get involved over the possible misuse of his trading account.
On Jan 18, SC issued a statement saying they had concluded their investigation into Azam and that based on evidence gathered, they were "not able to conclusively establish that a breach under section 25(4) of the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act 1991 (SICDA) has occurred".
However, following wide criticisms over its announcement, SC issued a clarification on the next day (Jan 19), where it clarified that it found no evidence of such an instance.
The country's first major rally this year will also be held amid fresh concerns surrounding the spread of the Omicron Covid-19 variant. - Mkini
