Don T Just Focus On Azam Baki In War Against Graft Says Anwar
Anwar Ibrahim says Digital Nasional Berhad is one example of a project with the potential to become the next 1MDB scandal. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Malaysians must not lose sight of other corruption cases, with the current focus on scandals surrounding certain individuals in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Anwar Ibrahim said today.
“Corruption is systemic and while everyone is focused on MACC and Azam Baki, other corrupt projects continue or are being approved,” the opposition leader said in a Facebook live video today.
Anwar pointed to Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) being one such project with the potential to become the next 1MDB scandal.
“However, our institutions are too damaged and lack the integrity to tackle these issues effectively.”
His comments come in light of the recent revelation of Azam’s alleged ownership of millions of shares in two public-listed companies.
“Investigations into MACC, Pandora Papers and the like need to be open and transparent otherwise there will be trickle-down effects which will be especially damaging to the people,” Anwar said.
He also said that he has brought up these issues time and again in Parliament, but ministers have eluded his line of questioning.
The PKR president condemned Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and his ministers for not taking the country’s corruption issues more seriously.
“Corruption has been institutionalised for decades in our country and having different types of regulating bodies is not going to solve this issue.
“It is not enough to just have an anti-corruption campaign and question those involved. The issue of corruption cannot be solved without a bigger movement from the public,” he said.
He urged the public to come together and call out those responsible for their corrupt acts.
“The government also needs to take firm measures to prevent widespread corruption in this country. Leaders and parties can change, but corruption must go,” he said. - FMT
