Luke Jeffers, 26, is said to have undergone 21 hours of surgery.
According to the UK’s Daily Mail, his family has set up an online fundraiser to cover the costs of his treatment and to send him home, as he did not have travel insurance when he came to Malaysia.
Jeffers, a miner from Perth, is said to have broken a vertebra, suffered an 8cm slash to his neck, a “life-changing” laceration to his left hand and a large cut to his shoulder.
Jeffers’ sister Brooke said he would be spending an “undetermined amount of time” in the intensive care unit. She said he did not have travel insurance as the trip to Malaysia was made at the last minute.
So far, the family has raised more than A$55,000 through the fundraiser on GoFundMe, which was filled with messages from well-wishers.
“The response so far has been amazing and we are so thankful and forever grateful to everyone who has donated and shared,” the UK news outlet quoted Jeffers’ mother as saying on Facebook.
The incident had taken place near an entertainment outlet in Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 23, with a video of the brawl showing a bloodied Jeffers getting beaten up by five to six men before eventually falling over.
Three suspects have been arrested so far, while police are tracking down the others. They are believed to have used a sharp weapon in the assault.
Wangsa Maju police chief Ashari Abu Samah had told FMT that a “drunken misunderstanding” had sparked the incident.
The case is being probed under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with a weapon, which provides for a five-year jail sentence, a fine or both, upon conviction. - FMT
