DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the appointment of the PM’s elder brother, Zamri Yaakob, as chairman of the National Farmers’ Organisation would fuel current scepticism towards the government.PETALING JAYA: The appointment of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s elder brother as chairman of the National Farmers’ Organisation (Nafas) has sparked concerns over the government’s commitment to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for transformation and stability, signed between the PM and Pakatan Harapan (PH) last week.
In a statement, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng expressed concern over the appointment of Zamri Yaakob, saying it would fuel current scepticism towards the government.
“Despite the MoU between the prime minister and PH not mentioning anything about appointments to Cabinet or government-linked companies (GLCs), there is no doubt that appointments that reek of political pay-off in exchange for support, conflict of interest or nepotism would increase greater scrutiny or scepticism about the government’s commitment towards the institutional reforms mentioned in the MoU.”
The MoU, covering six key areas, was signed last Monday by Ismail and PH party leaders, comprising Lim, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau.
It is aimed at bringing about the political stability needed to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic and reviving the country’s economy.
Yesterday, Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz had defended Zamri’s appointment, saying there was no element of nepotism as he was qualified for the job.
“It is not ethically wrong as he has the qualifications and capabilities to head the board.
“It has nothing to do with the prime minister as the decision was finalised by the Nafas board members,” he said.
Zamri was previously the Pahang Nafas chairman. - FMT
