Agong Lauds Bipartisan Mou Looks Forward To Political Stability
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong today lauded the "historic" bipartisan deal on reforms and political stability.
In a statement today, the Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said the Agong hoped the deal would end the political crisis and MPs would cooperate in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic in the interest of the country and the rakyat.
The Agong also noted that the deal was in concordance with the Conference of Rulers' decree that a stable government was needed to tackle the multiple crises faced by the country, said Ahmad Fadil.
"His Majesty reiterates that the people should not be burdened by an unending political crisis at a time when the country is having to deal with health and economic problems due to the Covid-19 pandemic," he said.
The Agong advised MPs to focus on tackling these problems during the ongoing Dewan Rakyat sitting, said Ahmad Fadil.
"His Highness expresses confidence that with political stability, a higher vaccination rate, and additional measures from the government, the economic recovery process will be expedited.
"These factors are also key to instilling confidence among (economic) stakeholders and investors," said Ahmad Fadil.
The king also urged the government to quickly implement pro-business and pro-investor policies to improve the country's competitiveness.
On Monday, the federal government signed a deal with Pakatan Harapan dubbed the 'Memorandum of Understanding on Transformation and Political Stability'.
The deal saw Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's government promising to implement a slew of institutional reforms within a schedule.
In return, Harapan offered a conditional promise not to oust Ismail Sabri from the government and support Budget 2022.
Civil society has also largely lauded the historic deal, which saw the government promising to lower the voting age, set term limits for the prime minister, and reform Parliament, among others. - Mkini
