Anwar Threatens Suit Over Not Properly Appointed As Pm Remarks
Anwar Ibrahim (left) has issued a second letter of demand to PAS MP Awang Hashim, this time for questioning his appointment as the prime minister.PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim has issued another letter of demand to Perikatan Nasional’s Awang Hashim, this time over his remarks that implied the prime minister was “not properly appointed” to office after the general election.
Law firm SN Nair & Partners said Awang, who is the Pendang MP, allegedly made the defamatory remarks outside the Dewan Rakyat on Feb 21.
Awang’s remarks were published in a TikTok video the next day. They were also reported in a Malaysiakini news report.
“Our client contends that the impugned words in the video have been uttered and published in bad faith and they are completely untrue,” Anwar’s lawyers said.
“They are also specious, laced with subterfuge, and question the wisdom and legality and constitutional powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“Our client was formally and officially invited by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and appointed and sworn in as the prime minister of Malaysia in an official ceremony after His Majesty formally concluded in his sagacious judgment that our client is likely to command the confidence of the majority of the members of the lower house.”
The lawyers demanded that Awang apologise within three days from today for the remarks and give an undertaking not to repeat them.
Earlier this week, Anwar’s lawyers issued a letter of demand calling for Awang to apologise for saying the prime minister was “more vindictive than Dr Mahathir Mohamad”.
Malaysiakini had quoted Awang making the remarks in response to corruption charges brought against Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan.
The lawyers said Awang’s remarks insinuated that Anwar had abused his powers as prime minister and finance minister and had intervened in the affairs of the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) and enforcement agencies. - FMT
