BERNAMA picPUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has pledged aid for Al-Quds University and madrasahs in Jerusalem alongside Malaysia's assistance for Gaza's recovery.
He said he had discussed this with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.
"Besides aid for Gaza's recovery, there will also be specific aid through wakaf endowments for Al-Quds University, which is headquartered in Jerusalem, as well as surrounding madrasahs.
"With this effort, I hope we can alleviate their burdens. Al-Quds University depends on aid," he said, adding that discussions were also held to establish programme links with the university.
Anwar said this during the Majlis Ilmu Madani at Masjid Putra in Putrajaya today.
The prime minister lamented the squabbling attitude that undermines Malaysia's role in rebuilding Gaza.
"In a world that competes to destroy some parts of the Muslim ummah and also weaken us, we still fight over petty things and fail to help each other, including in Gaza's recovery," he said.
Sheikh Dr Ekrima Sa'id Sabri, the Imam of Al-Aqsa Mosque and guest speaker at the event, urged Arab nations to similarly contribute to wakaf endowments for Jerusalem.
"Jerusalem requires the support of Arabs and Muslims to maintain its religious sanctity and the people living there."
"I invite Arab states to do the same (and fund wakaf endowments). To leave their mark on Jerusalem because it does not belong just to those living there but to all Muslims, as it shares the same status as Mekah and Madinah," he said.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Ekrima said Anwar had agreed to distribute copies of the Pact of Umar, the historical treaty signed between Caliph Umar al-Khattab and the non-Muslims of the Levant after his conquest, in mosques across Malaysia.
This, he said, was to "further instil the significance of Jerusalem" and impart lessons of "peace and humility".
The evening event, attended by thousands, was held between congregational Maghrib and Isyak prayers.
Also present were Na'im and his deputy, Dr Zulkifli Hasan.
On Feb 11, alongside Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Anwar had said Asean, which Malaysia chairs this year, has taken the position to continue its commitment to the reconstruction of Gaza.
Previously, Anwar had slammed those questioning Malaysia's move to assist in the rebuilding of Gaza.
Without singling out anyone, Anwar had said several parties, including a former national leader, had made sarcastic remarks on the government's effort to reconstruct Gaza through the Malaysia Wakaf City project. - NST
