Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he was confident that Canada would remain a strong and steady voice for constructive international engagement.PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Canadian prime minister Mark Carney on his victory in Canada’s federal election, which he said marks a “new chapter” for the country
In a Facebook post, Anwar said he was confident that Canada would remain a strong and steady voice for constructive international engagement under Carney’s leadership.
Anwar also said he looked forward to working closely with Carney to further strengthen bilateral ties, including through the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
“This election marks a new chapter for Canada and affirms the nation’s commitment to independence, resilience and principled leadership in uncertain times,” he said.
“The world must continue to uphold international trade as a driver of shared prosperity and stability.”
Carney is the first person to become Canadian prime minister without having experience as a legislator or cabinet member.
His Liberal Party won Canada’s election yesterday after securing a minority government that fell short of the strong mandate that the former central banker had sought.
Reuters reported that Carney spent 13 years at investment bank Goldman Sachs before being named deputy governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003.
He left in November 2004 for a top job in Canada’s finance department and returned to become governor of the central bank in 2008 at the age of just 42.
The Bank of England appointed Carney as the first non-British governor in the central bank’s three-century history in 2013 – making him the first person to head two G7 central banks.
Carney was elected Liberal leader last month, replacing former prime minister Justin Trudeau who resigned amid low approval ratings after nearly a decade in office.
Carney then called for an election, stressing the need to defend the country against US president Donald Trump amid worsening Canada-US relations. - FMT
