PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today highlighted various investment opportunities in Malaysia to Thai business leaders at a meeting in Bangkok.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said he met with representatives from three of Thailand’s leading conglomerates – TCC Group, Minor International Group, and PTT Group – to explore potential investments and strategic cooperation with Malaysia.
“Malaysia offers a compelling proposition for Thai investors, especially in high value-added sectors such as electrical and electronics (E&E), automotive (electric vehicles) and chemicals,” he said.
Anwar said he also welcomed Thai investment in sectors such as the digital economy, renewable energy, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), aerospace, pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
He added that Malaysia is guided by robust economic policies such as the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), and the Green Investment Strategy (GIS).
Anwar said that as the chair of Asean this year, Malaysia is committed to strengthening regional connectivity and fostering a resilient, inclusive and people-oriented region that is deeply integrated with the global economy and anchored in close relations with neighbours like Thailand.
Earlier, Anwar led the Malaysian delegation in a bilateral meeting with Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
“We welcomed the progress on existing agreements, particularly efforts to boost economic growth in northern Malaysia and southern Thailand,” he said in a Facebook post.
“With total trade exceeding US$25 billion (RM110.2 billion) last year, these initiatives will help us reach our US$30 billion (RM132.2 billion) target by 2027.”
He also said both countries agreed to accelerate key projects, including the new Rantau Panjang-Sungai Golok bridge and flood mitigation works along the Golok River.
Thailand was Malaysia’s seventh-largest trading partner globally and third-largest within Asean last year, with total trade amounting to US$25.03 billion (RM110.3 billion).
Bilateral trade stood at US$3.96 billion (RM17.45 billion) between January and February this year, a slight increase from the US$3.67 billion (RM16.20 billion) recorded during the same period in 2024. - FMT
